I bet if I asked you to name 10 roles you play right now, you’d have no problem listing them off. Maybe your list includes some of these common roles: Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Boss, Employee, Caregiver, Entrepreneur, Volunteer, or Friend. Being the Superwoman that you are, you probably rock each of those roles because you care about each one of them. But what about the role of “you?” Have you put everyone else first and put “you” last? Many women do. We get caught up being awesome bosses and spouses and moms, but end up forgetting to also be an awesome “you.” That’s not OK! This is where a girlfriend getaway comes in to play.
Trips with your family are great. Down time at home with a cup of coffee and a new book is wonderful. But, time with your girls to just break free, explore, and be wonderful “you,” well, that’s priceless! There are numerous reasons why we all need a girl’s only trip, so let’s explore a few of those.
Benefits of a Girlfriend Getaway
- You try new things. A trip away with other women allows us to step out of our comfort zone and experience new places and new adventures while still being surrounded by support and safety. Sharing these new things with our other women creates lifetime memories (and in my experience…some great stories). We are encouraged to try new things when we have the loving support of other women.
- You get to be YOU (with NO judgment). When you’re away with the girls, you don’t have to worry about wearing makeup or shaving your legs. Who cares if you’ve gained those five extra pounds? No one. Let’s just go explore or try a new restaurant or sit in the hotel and drink a bottle of wine. This is the time to do it! We’re all going through life and its endless changes, so we can relate to one another and openly discuss those endless changes together. NO pretense and NO judgment.
- It’s good for your health. Bonding with other women and feeling supported by other women has been proven to build stronger immune systems and can even lower your blood pressure. Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, author of A Happy You: Your Ultimate Prescription for Happiness, writes, “Medical studies show that the bond between women is critical to emotional and physical health.” It’s so much more than a trip. It’s a dose of medicine for the body, mind, and soul!
- You get to recharge and refresh. We can all admit that the cares, worries, anxieties, roles, and tasks of everyday life can often take a toll on us. But, when women get away together in a stress free atmosphere and take time to relax or “talk it out” with friends, their anxiety levels decrease. Being able to focus on wonderful “you” as well as the joy of camaraderie will raise your level of fulfillment in life as well as your confidence and resilience. When you return from a girlfriend getaway where you let it all go, you have more energy to be the best “you.” Isn’t that what we’re trying to be anyway? Isn’t that what we’re trying to give our spouses, kids, bosses, employees? The best “us.” Go refuel and return recharged. Everyone will be happier because you did.
- You get focused on your hopes and dreams. In bonding with your girls you’re likely going to share about your future plans, hopes, and aspirations in life. Sharing these may result in a far better chance that you actually accomplish them because you’ll get support from the women you’ve bonded. They will spur you on. This may even lead you to consider other viewpoints than your own. As women we can help one another grow and succeed by sharing and learning from each others’ stories and experiences.
