Admission: I’m not a football fan and although I’m in Denver currently, I only slightly attended to the Broncos big win last night…was enjoying planning the France retreat. Anyway, the point of this post was to be about what I DID pay attention to –
Lady Gaga’s singing of our national anthem. Wow.Tears.
I was reminded of it when the news replayed it again this morning. More tears. Can’t help it. Music like that reaches a place deep inside me.
What stands out to me about Gagaloo’s performance, and why I think it was possibly the rendition I’ve heard, was her execution of it. While I’m just starting the book, “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown, I find this to be a perfect example of how choosing what is essential is more powerful and more effective than trying to “do it all” or “have it all”. In this case, she wasn’t wearing some wild costume (like a box on her head), singing in outrageous keys or rhythms, setting off fireworks behind her or some other “more” that she could have added to “ramp it up”. What Mother Monster did was choose to execute a deliberate, powerful, and what’s now being called “possibly the best version ever sung” performance. In case you missed it, you can watch it here.
It takes discipline to do less but better, yet when we do so we “can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.”
